Figure 5.
Figure 5.

Mean pattern similarity for diagonal (cyan) and off-diagonal (blue) cells as a function of matrix and ROI (main analyses on white background and analyses controlling for boundary effects on gray background). If a given ROI codes for a particular type of information, higher similarity is expected on the diagonal as compared with the off-diagonal. For each ROI, finger + position, finger, and position coding were assessed by comparing the diagonal and off-diagonal within the SEQ, RK, and RP matrix, respectively. The main analyses (white background) indicate that the HC shows evidence for finger + position coding in the sequence but not for finger or position coding during random practice. In contrast, other ROIs show evidence of finger + position coding in the sequence as well as position and/or finger coding during random practice. To verify whether results in the SEQ and RP matrices are driven by boundary effects, we reran the corresponding analyses without boundaries (gray background). All ROIs show finger + position coding beyond boundaries in the sequence, but only the PMC and aSPL carry information about positions (beyond boundaries) under random conditions. Asterisks indicate significant differences between diagonal and off-diagonal (one-sided paired–sample t test; *pFDR < 0.05 and ** pFDR < 0.001). Colored circles represent individual data (N = 33), jittered in arbitrary distances on the x-axis to increase perceptibility. Red horizontal lines represent means and white circles represent medians. Note that Y-axis scales are different between ROIs to accommodate for differences in signal-to-noise ratio (and therefore in effect sizes) between cortical and subcortical ROIs.
