Experimental design. Left, Each trial consisted of an adapter (600 ms) followed by a blank (100 ms) and a test stimulus (300 ms). Middle, We used three different types of adapters. Right, Test stimuli consisted of five different texture families, five corresponding noise images, or a blank stimulus. One of the test stimuli was always from the same texture family as the adapter, though different samples. This design allowed us to test adaptation effects within a texture family (right, orange) or across texture families (right, yellow).
